A section of leaders allied to the Linda Mwananchi movement have called on the Inspector General of Police to take action over what they claim are threats by some politicians to disrupt the coalition’s planned meeting in Homa Bay County next weekend.
The leaders, led by Bumula MP Wamboka Wanami and Kabuchai MP Majimbo Kalasinga, said politicians should not be allowed to intimidate or prevent Kenyans from exercising their constitutional right to assemble and hold political meetings.
Addressing the press in Bumula, the leaders referred to remarks made during a recent political event in Homa Bay, which they claimed amounted to a threat to disrupt the planned gathering.
According to the leaders, the remarks were made during an event in Homa Bay, where the speaker cautioned Linda Mwananchi leaders against using language he said could provoke residents.
Linda Mwananchi leaders, however, rejected that position, saying no politician should dictate where or how they hold political meetings.
Wanami called on the IG to investigate statements that, in his view, could threaten the movement’s planned gathering.
“We are calling upon the Inspector General of Police to take action against leaders who are threatening our meeting in Homa Bay. We cannot allow anyone to deny Kenyans the right to assemble and hold meetings anywhere in this country,” Wanami said.
He said Linda Mwananchi would proceed with its plans despite the concerns raised by some local leaders.
“We have heard the threats that have been made concerning our meeting in Homa Bay, but we want to make it clear that we are going there. We will not be stopped by threats from any individual or group,” he said.
Kalasinga said political leaders should embrace competition and allow different groups to mobilise supporters without interference.
“Political leaders must respect the freedom of Kenyans to organise and hold meetings wherever they want. You cannot decide that because a particular movement is coming to your region, it should not be allowed to hold a meeting,” he said.
The leaders also issued a two-day ultimatum to the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) to register Linda Mwananchi, threatening to stage demonstrations if their demand is not met.
“We are giving the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties two days to register Linda Mwananchi. If they fail to do so, we will mobilise Kenyans and demonstrate peacefully to demand our right to be registered,” Wanami said.
The leaders maintained that Linda Mwananchi would continue with its mobilisation activities across the country despite what they described as opposition from rival political leaders.
