The application window for the September 2026 intake at Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) campuses is set to close at midnight on Tuesday, with prospective students having only hours left to submit their applications.
The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) opened the application window on July 23, giving eligible students an opportunity to apply for diploma and certificate courses at KMTC.
The deadline is August 11, 2026.
KUCCPS has clarified that students already placed in universities to pursue degree programmes cannot apply for diploma or certificate courses at KMTC during the current application window.
The clarification followed enquiries from parents and guardians whose children had hoped to pursue KMTC courses but were placed in degree programmes during the 2026/27 placement cycle.
One parent said they had been applying for a KMTC course for their daughter since March but were unable to proceed after she was placed in a degree programme they had not applied for.
"I have been applying for KMTC courses since March for my daughter and now she is locked out of applying for the KMTC course of her choice in the September 2026 intake because you guys placed her on a random degree programme which neither I nor she applied for. Please urgently assist," the parent said.
KUCCPS said its system does not allow a student to hold two placements within the same placement cycle.
"All students placed in degree programmes in 2026 are not enabled to apply for KMTC to ensure no student can hold two placements in one cycle. She will be able to apply for KMTC's March 2027 intake," the agency said.
KUCCPS also rejected claims that students were randomly assigned programmes or institutions.
"Applicants are placed in programmes based on their choices they submit," the agency said.
The clarification comes as interest in technical and vocational education and training (TVET) and other non-degree programmes continues to grow among students who qualify for university.
TVET programmes offer practical and hands-on training, with diploma, certificate and artisan courses providing alternatives to degree programmes.
When releasing the 2026/27 university and college placement results on July 8 at the Edge Convention Centre in South C, Nairobi, Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba said 293,869 students had been placed in universities and tertiary institutions.
Of this number, 202,133 were placed in degree programmes, while 91,736 joined TVET and other non-degree tertiary courses, including diploma, certificate and artisan programmes.
Ogamba said 8,915 students who qualified for degree programmes had opted for diploma and TVET courses instead.
With the KMTC application deadline approaching, eligible students seeking admission for the September intake have until midnight on August 11 to complete their applications.
