Former Kitui County Assembly Majority Leader Harrison Mawia has assumed office as the substantive clerk, transitioning from elected politics to administration.
The 35-year-old Mawia was sworn into office by Assembly Speaker Kevin Katisya.
He pledged to discharge his new responsibilities diligently, fairly and without fear or favour.
“I have now moved from an elected politician into an administrator and a leader. I will serve all and sundry equally,” Mawia said shortly after taking office.
“I am a leader. Even when I previously occupied a political office, I did not carry myself as a politician but as a leader. I will serve diligently and with fairness,” he added.
Mawia said he would draw on the experience he gained during his tenure as an MCA and Majority Leader to meet the expectations of both legislators and assembly staff.
He said his previous experience in the assembly had given him a good understanding of the roles and expectations of both elected leaders and civil servants.
“I do not see myself having a problem serving in my new capacity because I am in a familiar environment.
“As an MCA, I interacted with my counterparts, who are state officers, as well as assembly staff, who are civil servants. I understand what each side needs,” he said.
Mawia also pledged to foster a cordial working relationship between the county assembly and the county executive to facilitate seamless service delivery to the people of Kitui.
Speaker Kevin Katisya, who was accompanied by deputy governor Augustine Kanani when he formally escorted Mawia to his new office, said the former legislator had emerged the best candidate for the position from a field of 19 applicants.
Katisya said Mawia had resigned as MCA for Migwani ward following his appointment to enable him to assume his new responsibilities.
“He has already resigned as MCA to facilitate his swearing-in, and I have already written to the IEBC notifying them that the Migwani ward seat has fallen vacant,” Katisya said.
Congratulating Mawia on his appointment, Kanani urged him to recognise that his new position placed him in the service of the entire population of Kitui, rather than the narrower constituency he represented as Migwani MCA.
Kanani further challenged him to work towards maintaining a harmonious relationship between the assembly and the executive for the benefit of Kitui residents.
“The people of Kitui want to be served in the best way possible. Nothing less. That is what we should be working towards achieving, having been entrusted with these leadership opportunities,” Kanani said.
