Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jnr

Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jnr has renewed calls for the national government to fast-track the dualling of the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway following a road crash in Salama that killed 17 Catholic pilgrims.

Speaking while addressing staff during a confirmation, promotion and admission ceremony for new county employees at his office in Wote on October 12, Mutula urged the government to hasten the process to prevent further loss of lives.

Mutula said the loss of 17 lives was a stark reminder that more needed to be done to protect road users.

The 17 pilgrims from Mikindani Parish in Mombasa died in a crash at Salama, Makueni County, while travelling to Subukia Shrine in Nakuru.

He demanded the urgent dualling of the highway and asked the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) to implement immediate safety measures at Salama, similar to those introduced at Salgaa and Nithi Bridge.

"The 461km Nairobi-Mombasa  highway dualling has stalled for almost a decade," Mutula said.

He also commended ECM Joyce Mutua for comforting the bereaved families at Sultan Hamud Level 4 Hospital.
