ASEAN marks 59th anniversary as Kenya, member states strengthen diplomatic ties

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) recently marked its 59th anniversary, with this year’s theme, "Navigating our Future, Together."

The event brought members of the ASEAN Diaspora, diplomats, government officials and representatives of international organisations in Nairobi to celebrate the bloc's achievements and growing engagement with Kenya and the wider African continent, which captures ASEAN’s endurance and commitment to unity, dialogue and collective progress.

The anniversary celebration was held over the weekend at the residence of Ambassador Witjaksono Adji, Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to Kenya and Chair of the ASEAN Committee in Nairobi (ACN) for 2026.

Speaking during the event, Ambassador Witjaksono Adji noted the bilateral relations between the two countries, covering trade, education, and diplomatic partnerships.

"Kenya, as an important gateway to East Africa and a regional hub, offers tremendous opportunities for stronger engagement with ASEAN. And ASEAN, in turn, sees Africa not simply as a market, but as a partner in building a more prosperous, sustainable and resilient future. This is why the ASEAN Committee in Nairobi attaches great importance to strengthening our engagement with our Kenyan and African partners." Said Adji

The Ambassador further emphasised that on academic exchange programmes. "Throughout the year, we have had the opportunity to engage with Kenyan students and academics through Diplomatic Day at Daystar University; to share our cultures and cuisines through the ASEAN Food Festival; and to strengthen our networks through the ASEAN Committee in Nairobi Golf Tournament."

The gathering provided an opportunity for diplomats to reflect on ASEAN's journey since its establishment and to highlight the importance of stronger cooperation among Southeast Asia, Kenya, and Africa.

In attendance was Ministry of Foreign Affairs Deputy Director General for Political and Diplomatic Affairs Mustapha Ibrahim, who also shared the same sentiments.

"Kenya, as a founding member of the East African Community (EAC), a firm proponent of regional integration and a strong advocate of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), greatly values ASEAN's experience in advancing not only regional but also continental integration and recognises the valuable lessons they offer in advancing economic cooperation, connectivity, and shared prosperity."

The celebration also showcased the rich cultural diversity of ASEAN member states through the national attire, traditions, and cuisines of Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand.

The anniversary comes as ASEAN, among its member states, continues to strengthen its role further in deepening cooperation, including trade and investment, the digital economy, industrialisation, innovation, climate action, the green transition, capacity building, and cultural and people-to-people exchanges.

The celebration also brought together representatives from different regions and international institutions, among them United Nations Director-General Zainab Hawa, Dean of the Diplomatic Corps in Nairobi, Amb Beyene Russom, the Philippines ambassador to Kenya Ms Marie Charlotte G. Tang, Malaysia High Commissioner Ruzaimi Mohamad, Chargé d’Affaires, Royal Thai Embassy in Nairobi Piyaporn Putanapan, Australia Commissioner, Andrew Barnes, China Ambassador to Kenya Guo Haiyan, Somali Ambassador to Kenya Jabril Ibrahim Abdulle, among other Diplomatic Corps, and representatives from the diaspora of the four ASEAN countries.
