Yan Diomande Honors Late Sister After Historic Real Madrid Transfer

Yan Diomande’s rise to the top of European football has been shaped by rejection, sacrifice, family and an ambition that began in the crowded streets of Abidjan.

The 19-year-old Ivorian forward has now completed a blockbuster move to Real Madrid from RB Leipzig in a deal worth up to €135 million (£115.7 million), making him the most expensive African footballer in history. He has signed a seven-year contract with the Spanish giants.

"Moving to Real Madrid is a childhood dream come true for me. I am all the more grateful to the management at RB Leipzig for making this move possible despite my current contract."

Humble Beginnings and Childhood Dreams in Abidjan

But before becoming one of the most valuable young forwards in football, Diomande grew up in a household in Abidjan that about 25 people shared. Football became his escape and his biggest ambition.

As a child, he would pretend to be asleep before sneaking into the living room to watch football on a television with the volume turned almost all the way down. Cristiano Ronaldo was his idol. Diomande recalled wearing a fake Manchester United shirt with Ronaldo’s number seven written on the back and dreaming of becoming a professional footballer.

Overcoming Rejection to Break Into European Football

His journey, however, was far from straightforward. He left home at a young age to join an academy near the Ghanaian border before later moving to the United States. His attempts to break into European football were initially met with repeated rejection, with several clubs turning him down before Spanish side Leganés eventually gave him an opportunity.

"I was able to establish myself in one of Europe’s top leagues, earn my place in the Côte d’Ivoire national team and represent my country on the biggest stage of all, the FIFA World Cup."

Playing in Memory of His Sister Roxane

Away from football, Diomande's journey has also been marked by personal tragedy. His younger sister, Roxane, died aged 15 in 2025. In an emotional letter published by The Players' Tribune ahead of the 2026 World Cup, Diomande reflected on her belief in his football dreams and dedicated his career to her memory.

"Before I even had real boots, you were telling everybody, ‘My brother is going to be the best in the world!’” He wrote that everything he does on the pitch is for her and promised that whenever he scores, he would ensure people remember her name. He also recalled her belief that he would one day become the world's best footballer.

A New Era at Bernabéu Under José Mourinho

Now, Diomande begins the most demanding chapter of his career under the guidance of José Mourinho, the “Special One,” as Real Madrid embark on a renewed project under the Portuguese tactician. Mourinho’s influence was reportedly crucial in convincing the Ivorian to choose Madrid, with the manager speaking to him in fluent French about his vision and the role he could play in the team.
