DCI Boss Mohamed Amin/ FILEThe Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) is investigating whether some of the suspects in the murder of Dr Victoria Mutiso may also be linked to the September 9, 2025 drive-by shooting of lawyer Kyalo Mbobu, DCI Director Mohamed Amin has said.
Amin said investigators were examining the possible connection as the probe into the July 29 killing of Dr Mutiso continued.
He stressed that detectives were pursuing several additional leads.
“Some of the suspects involved in this incident may also be linked to the tragic drive-by shooting” of the lawyer, Amin said during a briefing on the progress of the investigation.
The DCI boss did not provide further details on Kyalo Mbobu's case, saying investigators were still pursuing evidence and that some information could not be disclosed at this stage because of the ongoing investigations.
The possible connection emerged as detectives continued piecing together what Amin described as a meticulously planned operation that resulted in Mutiso's killing.
According to Amin, investigators have so far identified a network involving alleged organisers, a rider, vehicles believed to have been used during the operation and police officers suspected of playing different roles.
He said investigators had identified one of the suspects as a central organiser who was allegedly involved in coordinating the logistics and movements of the team.
Investigators also identified two vehicles that were allegedly used during the operation, including one investigators believe was used to lure the Uber driver and another said to have transported members of the alleged execution team.
A motorcycle was also recovered after detectives identified the suspected rider, whom Amin said had been arrested.
The investigation subsequently led detectives to two Kenya Police Service officers whom Amin said were suspected of playing critical roles in the operation.
According to Amin, one of the officers is under investigation, while another has been arrested.
According to Amin, forensic examination linked a firearm recovered from a police armoury to the killing.
The firearm, a Mini Jericho pistol fitted with a magazine containing nine-millimetre ammunition, was recovered during a search at the armoury.
According to Amin, scrutiny of the Arms Movement Register showed that the firearm had previously been issued to one of the officers under investigation.
The weapon was subjected to ballistic examination at the National Police Service Forensic Laboratory.
According to Amin, ballistic analysis indicated that the firearm was the one used to shoot Mutiso.
According to the DCI boss, spent cartridges recovered from the scene and a bullet recovered from Mutiso's body were also subjected to forensic examination and matched evidence from the firearm.
Investigators are also pursuing the motive behind the killing.
According to Amin, investigators are pursuing the theory that the killing may have been linked to a long-running land dispute involving a parcel in Mlolongo.
According to Amin, Mutiso had placed a caveat on land parcel LR No. 1504/13 in Mlolongo, an action investigators believe was perceived as a threat to the interests of parties involved in the ownership and control of the property.
Amin said the investigation was also examining the alleged involvement of two people whom he identified as suspects in the case.
According to Amin, investigators allege the two were involved in organising and financing the operation.
The investigation had earlier established that Mutiso reported a separate security incident on July 7, when two men on a motorcycle allegedly pointed a gun at her as she drove along Gong Road near Junction Road.
She fled the scene and reported the incident at Kilimani Police Station.
Three weeks later, on July 29, she was shot while travelling in an Uber.
Amin said detectives had since combined forensic analysis, CCTV footage, intelligence and witness interviews to reconstruct the events surrounding the killing.
Amin said detectives were pursuing the wider network behind the killing.
He said investigators were determined to identify and arrest anyone who played a role, including alleged financial organisers, suppliers of firearms, riders, shooters and facilitators.
The possible link to the September 9, 2025 shooting of lawyer Kyalo Mbobu is among the leads detectives are pursuing as investigations continue.
Amin said investigators would continue following the evidence before reaching any conclusions on the possible connection.
