DCI boss Amin Mohammed addresses press/CYRUS OMBATIA serving police officer has been identified as the person who allegedly fatally shot Dr Victoria Mutiso, Directorate of Criminal Investigations boss Mohamed Amin has said.
He said investigators had established the identity of the officer who allegedly pulled the trigger during the July 29 shooting of Mutiso in Nairobi.
The DCI boss said the development followed investigations by a multi-agency team that took over the case and pursued several leads surrounding the killing.
Amin said investigators had arrested two suspects believed to have played different roles in the operation and recovered a motorcycle allegedly used during the mission.
According to him, one of the suspects is believed to have driven a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado that was used to intercept the taxi in which Mutiso was travelling.
He said the suspect allegedly coordinated logistics and facilitated the movement of the team involved in the operation.
Investigators also established that two Toyota Prados were used during the incident, with one allegedly deployed to block the road while the other was used to transport members of the team.
“We managed to get the owners who confirmed they were hired by the suspect,” Amin said during a press briefing.
The DCI boss said another suspect had been identified as the motorcycle rider who allegedly ferried the shooter to the scene.
The suspect was arrested on Thursday night and investigators recovered the motorcycle, Amin said.
He said interrogations of the two suspects subsequently led investigators to serving police officers whom they believe played critical roles in the alleged conspiracy.
According to Amin, one police officer based in Kikuyu is believed to have acted as a link between alleged financiers and the operational team.
The officer is also alleged to have been the source of the firearm used in the killing.
Amin said the officer had gone on the run after investigators began closing in on the alleged network.
“Through analysis of evidence, we have further established the identity of the officer who pulled the trigger,” Amin said.
Another police officer based in Kikuyu has since been arrested, with investigators alleging that forensic evidence places him at the scene of the fatal shooting.
Amin said investigators had positively identified the officer as the person who allegedly shot Mutiso.
The DCI boss described the alleged involvement of serving police officers in the killing as a serious betrayal of the uniform and public trust.
“The identity of these officers represents grave betrayal of the uniform and public trust,” he said.
He said the DCI would pursue all those implicated in the killing and ensure they face the full force of the law.
Mutiso was shot dead on the morning of July 29 while travelling in a taxi along Raila Odinga Way in Nairobi.
Her killing triggered a major investigation involving homicide detectives and other agencies, with investigators examining the circumstances surrounding the shooting and the people believed to have planned and executed the operation.
The latest developments point to a suspected coordinated operation involving alleged financiers, logistical facilitators, drivers and members of an execution team.
