Makueni Senator Dan Maanzo, Kajiado North MP Onesmus Ngogoyo among other opposition leaders at DCI headquarter/ SCREENGRABOpposition leaders on Monday demanded answers from investigators following the arrest of Mukurwe-ini MP John Kaguchia.
They have called for due process and immediate access to the legislator after he was taken to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters in Nairobi.
The leaders include Makueni Senator Dan Maanzo, Kathiani MP and National Assembly Deputy Minority Leader Robert Mbui, Kajiado North MP Onesmus Ngogoyo, among other leaders.
They gathered outside the DCI headquarters along Kiambu Road shortly after Kaguchia was brought in by detectives following his arrest outside the Royal Media Services studios earlier in the morning.
Kaguchia had spent the night at the media house after appearing on Inooro TV's Kiririmbi programme.
Addressing the media outside the DCI headquarters, Maanzo said Kaguchia's legal team had sought access to the MP as they attempted to establish the circumstances surrounding his detention.
He said the lawyers wanted the matter handled through the legal process if investigators intended to take further action against the legislator.
"If there is a case against him, let him be processed in accordance with the law and presented before the court. That is the proper legal process," Maanzo said.
The senator also said the legal team was seeking information on the progress of the investigations and the next steps to be taken by detectives.
Mbui, who also addressed journalists outside the DCI offices, called for due process and said elected leaders should be allowed access to legal representation while in police custody.
"We are asking that due process be followed and that his lawyers be allowed to see him. That is what the law requires," Mbui said.
He added that opposition leaders had gone to the DCI headquarters to monitor the situation and receive information on the investigations involving the legislator.
Several other opposition politicians and supporters also gathered outside the offices as they awaited updates from detectives and Kaguchia's legal team.
The MP was arrested shortly after leaving the Royal Media Services premises, where he had remained overnight following his television interview.
His arrest came after remarks attributed to him during the programme generated public debate and criticism from a section of political leaders.
By Monday morning, the DCI had not publicly announced the specific offences under investigation.
