Azimio Council Secretary General Caroli Omondi speaking Jubilee Deputy Party Leader Fred Matiang'i has officially joined the Azimio Coalition's National Council.
This come after being appointed to the coalition's top decision-making organ alongside former Meru Governor Peter Munya and Senator Lenny Kivuti.
The appointments were announced on Monday by Azimio Council Secretary General Caroli Omondi following a meeting of the coalition's leadership.
Omondi said the council had resolved to reorganise the coalition's structures and other organs as part of a rebranding exercise.
He also announced the appointment of Matiang'i, Munya and Kivuti to the National Council.
"The Council resolved to reorganise the party structures, the various organs of the party, as well as to move forward with the rebranding of the Azimio Coalition," he said.
"The Council decided to admit two new members into its ranks. That is His Excellency Fred Matiang'i, the Honourable former Governor His Excellency Peter Munya, and Honourable Senator Lenny Kivuti to become the new Council members. So there are three new members to the Council.”
The council resolved to invite DAP-Kenya, one of Azimio's founding members, to rejoin the coalition.
Omondi said the party leader, Eugene Wamalwa, had confirmed the party would return to the coalition subject to its internal approval processes.
The coalition also invited Umoja na Maendeleo Party and the Democratic Party to join Azimio, with their respective leaders indicating they would do so after completing their internal processes.
Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party is a political coalition formed ahead of the 2022 general election bringing together several political parties and leaders who sought to compete against the then Deputy President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza Alliance.
The coalition was formed around the presidential bid of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, with support from several parties, including ODM, Wiper, Jubilee and other smaller parties.
In the 2022 election, Azimio’s presidential candidate Raila lost to Ruto, who was elected President.
Speaking on July 30, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka dismissed reports suggesting retired President Uhuru Kenyatta is spearheading opposition efforts to mount a political challenge against President Ruto next year.
He said opposition leaders were independently strategising on how to approach the next election and cautioned against portraying Uhuru as the person organising a political campaign against the President.
"So do not paint a picture that Uhuru is organising us to face Ruto. We are organising ourselves to face Ruto and nobody will do it for us," Kalonzo said at the ACK Cathedral in Embu.
The Wiper leader said the meeting convened by Uhuru on Monday in his capacity as Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition Council chair would focus on strengthening the coalition rather than plotting against Ruto.
