Several high-profile corruption and economic crimes cases will come up in courts across the country this week as the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) pursues the recovery of millions of shillings in lost public funds.
The cases, scheduled between August 3 and August 7, will see courts hear rulings, hearings and mentions involving former senior government officials, county executives and other public officers in Nairobi, Kakamega, Eldoret, Meru and Lodwar.
Among the matters scheduled for ruling is a suit seeking the recovery of Sh1.4 million allegedly paid fraudulently as salaries by the Homa Bay County Government.
The case, involving Eve Goga and three others, is expected before the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court on Monday.
The same court will also begin hearing a case involving former National Industrial Training Authority (NITA) Director General Paul Kipsang Kosgei and four others.
The accused face charges relating to the alleged fraudulent acquisition of public property after allegedly authorising payments amounting to Sh28.4 million to Xphonics Limited. The hearing is scheduled for August 3, 4 and 6.
On Tuesday, the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court will hear a recovery suit against Charles Kizito Wanjala Masinde, in which the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) is seeking restitution of Sh3.5 million allegedly obtained through salary advances, reimbursable payments and an unpaid motor vehicle while serving at Kenya Wine Agencies Limited (KWAL).
In Kakamega, the Anti-Corruption Court is expected to hear a case involving former Vihiga County Chief Officer for Health Services Arnold Kimiya Mamadi and 11 others on August 6.
They face charges including conspiracy to commit an offence of corruption, fraudulent acquisition of public property and uttering a false document over the alleged irregular award of a tender for the construction of a blood transfusion centre at the Vihiga County Level Four Hospital.
The Milimani Anti-Corruption Court will also mention a civil recovery suit seeking Sh43.1 million allegedly paid irregularly from the Kasarani National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF) and Project Management Committee accounts.
The case involves Silvan Onyango Ogoda and nine others.
In Eldoret, the court will mention a criminal case against former Chebororwa Agricultural Training Centre principal Nicholas Kiprop Kaino and four others.
The accused are facing charges of conspiracy to commit an economic crime and fraudulent acquisition of public property over the alleged fraudulent withdrawal of Sh11.4 million belonging to the institution.
Another high-profile matter expected before the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court on Friday involves former Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko and another accused person.
The case, which will come up for mention, relates to conflict of interest allegations surrounding the award of a Sh10 million revenue collection services contract for the Nairobi City County Government.
Elsewhere, the Meru Law Court will mention a corruption case involving Pauline Waruguru Mwangi and three others over the alleged embezzlement of Sh4.8 million allocated by the Igembe North NG-CDF for the procurement of six transformers.
In Lodwar, the court will hear a case involving former District Accountant Elias Tirop Tomno and Francis Gatua.
The two are charged with conspiracy to commit an offence of corruption and fraudulent acquisition of public property in connection with the alleged mismanagement of Sh2.6 million at the Turkana District Treasury.
