At least 39 people aboard a passenger boat travelling from Kenya to Zanzibar were rescued after the vessel encountered rough seas and began capsizing off the Kwale coast on Saturday morning.
Police and the Coast Guard officials said the incident occurred about 10 miles east of Shimoni in Lunga Lunga Subcounty.
The vessel, MV Siri ya Mafanikio, was carrying 30 passengers and 10 crew members and was en route to Pemba Island in Zanzibar when it ran into strong winds, powerful currents and high waves.
Authorities said the boat was struck by heavy tides and began capsizing in deep waters.
Officials from the Kenya Coast Guard Service (KCGS), assisted by Kenya Navy personnel, responded immediately after receiving reports of the maritime emergency.
The rescue teams managed to save all passengers and crew before towing the damaged vessel back to the shore at Shimoni Port.
Police confirmed that all 39 people on board were accounted for and that no fatalities or injuries were reported.
The Kenya Coast Guard Service is handling further investigations into the incident, officials said on Sunday.
