Veteran coach Gilbert Selebwa is confident he can guide the Michael Olunga Foundation Academy (Mofa) to the SportPesa League in the 2027/28 season.
Speaking after being unveiled as the club’s new head coach, Selebwa said he is ready for the task of securing promotion to the top flight in a year.
He revealed that team patron, Kenyan international striker Michael Olunga, has set a clear target for the squad to qualify for the SportPesa League for the 2027/28 season.
“Given a free hand, full support, and quality players, we can qualify for the top-tier league. Our motto is ‘Huu ndio mwaka’ (this is the year). My record of promoting teams speaks for itself,” said a confident Selebwa.
Selebwa takes the reins from Charles Warinda, who parted ways with the Homa Bay-based side towards the end of last season.
“Mofa is a good club with great facilities and talented players. They have finished in the top five over the last two seasons and only lost steam on the home stretch,” noted the tactician.
The CAF A-licensed coach added: “With experienced players in the squad, a situation where the team loses track towards the end of the season will not occur, as they will provide the necessary leadership.”
However, Selebwa predicted that the upcoming National Super League campaign will be a fiercely contested affair.
“With teams like Bidco, Sofapaka, Naivas, Equity FC and most likely Kariobangi Sharks, the league will be exceptionally competitive," he said.
To bolster their chances, Selebwa plans to reinforce the squad with seasoned talent.
“With the core of the team intact, we shall only add a few experienced players,” he explained, following the departure of utility player and club captain Joseph Bate, who joined big-spending Nairobi United.
Selebwa confirmed that pre-season preparations will kick off on Monday: “We want to assess the squad starting Monday, then make informed decisions on the specific areas we need to strengthen.”
Selebwa’s most recent assignment was with Mombasa United last season, where he was on the verge of guiding the coastal side to the top tier before his departure.
He also enjoyed a brief stint with the relegated Vihiga United, alongside previous managerial roles at AFC Leopards, Shabana, Luanda Villa, Samwest Blackboots and Congo United.
