Newly acquired Nairobi United goalkeeper Gad Mathews/HANDOUT Veteran goalkeeper Gad Mathews says he is eager to embrace a fresh challenge after completing a two-year move to SportPesa League side Nairobi United, bringing the curtain down on a trophy-laden spell at Gor Mahia.
The 30-year-old free agent ends a glittering six-year stint at Gor Mahia, swapping the familiar green jersey for the rising ambitions of Nairobi United.
As skipper, he helped K'Ogalo to league titles, FKF Cup glory and clinched the 2022/23 Golden Glove.
His arrival at United signals the dawn of a bold new era at a club determined to turn lofty ambitions into success both domestically and on the continental stage.
"I am grateful to Nairobi United for believing in me and giving me this opportunity," Mathews said.
He arrives with a wealth of top-flight experience, having previously featured for Western Stima, Kariobangi Sharks, Kisumu AllStars and Wazito before joining Gor Mahia in 2020.
What initially appeared to be a modest signing quickly became one of the club's biggest success stories as Mathews established himself as the undisputed first-choice goalkeeper, producing a string of match-winning performances and becoming a fan favourite.
"I am excited about this new chapter in my career and I cannot wait to get started with my teammates," he said.
His time at Gor Mahia will be remembered for several defining moments, none more dramatic than his penalty shootout heroics in the 2021 FKF Cup final against AFC Leopards, a performance that secured the trophy and qualification for continental competition."I have enjoyed every moment of my career and every club I have represented has helped shape the player I am today," he said.
Beyond his performances, Mathews developed into one of the dressing room leaders at Gor Mahia and was entrusted with the captaincy during the latter stages of his stay as the club underwent a period of transition.
His leadership qualities and experience are expected to be invaluable for a Nairobi United side seeking to establish itself among Kenya's elite.
"My responsibility now is to work hard every day and help this team achieve its ambitions," he said."I leave Gor Mahia with wonderful memories and deep appreciation for everyone who supported me throughout my journey."
"I know expectations will be high, but pressure is part of football and I am ready for the challenge," he said.
Mathews has already begun training with his new teammates as preparations intensify for the new campaign.
