Mohammed Mchulla with Mathare United head coach David Ouma during a training session/HANDOUTMchulla, who played a key role in helping Mathare United avoid relegation last season, has emerged as the frontrunner for the position following Okidi’s departure.
The experienced tactician was appointed Mathare United’s interim head coach in May after John Kamau was sacked. Although he was widely expected to land the role permanently, the club instead appointed veteran coach David Ouma.
Contacted on Thursday, Mchulla declined to discuss the reports. “I don’t want to comment about that now,” he said. Mchulla has previously coached National Super League side Modern Coast Rangers and former FKF Premier League club Wazito FC, earning a reputation as one of the country’s experienced tacticians.
Okidi left Mombasa United after guiding the coastal side to promotion from the National Super League. The national Under-17 Rising Stars assistant coach has since joined SportPesa League outfit Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) as assistant coach, replacing Paul Ogai and reuniting with veteran head coach Robert Matano.
As they prepare for life in the top flight, Mombasa United have begun reshaping their squad, releasing 14 players. The departing players are goalkeeper Richard Ebenyo, Frank Wata, Shadrack Ngamia, Peter Mbuya, Answar Shamun, Nehemiah Onchiri, Mayson Andala, Faraj Ominde, Abdallah Swaleh, Christian Zigah, Samuel Atta, Kennedy Odhiambo, Rodgers Aloro and Abdulrahman Said.

Mombasa United secured promotion alongside National Super League champions Migori Youth and 3K FC. However, the promotion and relegation process remains subject to legal proceedings after challenges were filed at the Sports Disputes Tribunal and the High Court.
The implementation of promotion and relegation has been temporarily suspended pending the determination of the cases.
