Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has urged Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka to remain in the opposition, telling him not to disappoint supporters by entering into any political arrangement with President William Ruto ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Speaking on Thursday during a meeting of opposition leaders at the SKM Centre in Nairobi, Sonko described the next presidential election as Kalonzo's defining political moment, saying it represented what he termed the veteran politician's final opportunity to ascend to the country's highest office.
"Your Excellency, this is your only bullet," Sonko said as he addressed Kalonzo before the gathering.
He appealed to the Wiper leader to remain committed to the opposition's agenda and assured him of his backing.
"Kalonzo Musyoka, we are behind you. Do not disappoint us, and don't join them. We will support you to the end. Your Excellency, remember this is your last bullet in politics to become President," Sonko said.
The former governor also sought to reassure opposition supporters following circulation of online claims suggesting Kalonzo had held talks with President Ruto, saying the videos being shared were not recent.
According to Sonko, the clips were from the presentation of the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) report at State House in March 2024.
"When we saw those video clips at State House, we were very shocked. I told Kenyans those were old stories. They took those videos and pictures from when the NADCO report was presented and posted them as though they were current," he said.
Sonko maintained that the opposition's position remained unchanged.
"Our stand is that we are going to be with the people. Where the people are, that is where we are going," he said.
He further said he had previously worked alongside Kalonzo during political activities in Mombasa and urged him to remain steadfast despite political pressure.
"I am with the wananchi, and you have also been championing the same cause. We are pushing the same agenda together with Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino," Sonko said.
He reaffirmed his commitment to supporting opposition leaders as they seek to build a united political front ahead of the 2027 elections.
The meeting at the SKM Centre brought together several opposition figures as consultations on coalition-building and joint political strategy continue.
The remarks came a day after Senate Deputy Minority Leader and Kitui Senator Enoch Wambua dismissed reports circulating on social media claiming Kalonzo had met President Ruto to discuss a possible political alliance.
Wambua said the Wiper leader had not held any such meeting and remained committed to working with leaders within the opposition coalition to field a single presidential candidate against Ruto in the 2027 General Election.
