The Defence Principal Secretary, Dr Patrick Mariru, on Thursday inspected the ongoing expansion and modernisation of Kenneth Matiba Hospital in Murang'a County.
During the inspection PS Mariru reaffirmed the government's commitment to delivering quality healthcare infrastructure across the country.
During the inspection, Dr Mariru reviewed the progress of construction and expressed satisfaction that the project is advancing steadily, with implementation now approaching the halfway mark.
The expansion project, which began in June 2025, is being implemented by the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) under the Ministry of Defence, which is serving as the project manager.
Once complete, the upgraded Kenneth Matiba Hospital will feature a modern trauma centre, expanded inpatient facilities, a doctors' plaza and other critical support infrastructure, significantly increasing the hospital's capacity to provide emergency, specialised and referral healthcare services.
The project is also expected to ease pressure on existing referral hospitals while improving access to quality healthcare for residents of Murang'a County and neighbouring regions.
Dr Mariru said the project reflects the Government of Kenya's commitment, under the leadership of President William Ruto, to expanding access to quality, affordable and specialised healthcare services.
He commended the Kenya Defence Forces for the professionalism, efficiency and engineering excellence demonstrated in delivering strategic national infrastructure projects, reaffirming the Ministry of Defence's commitment to completing the hospital within the stipulated timelines.
The Kenneth Matiba Hospital expansion is among several flagship public infrastructure projects currently being undertaken by the Ministry of Defence across the country, underscoring the Ministry's growing role in supporting national development through the delivery of critical health, education, housing and sports infrastructure.
