their grievances on July 30, 2026. /LEAH MUTASHINurses staged a protest in Nairobi on Thursday as they pressed for the resolution of longstanding labour grievances, marking the start of a nationwide industrial action called by their union.
The nurses under the umbrella of Kenya National Union of Nurses marched through the city carrying placards and blowing whistles before converging outside Afya House, where they presented their grievances.
They also planned to deliver a petition to the Council of Governors, calling for the signing and implementation of the collective bargaining agreement (CBA).
Among the issues raised were the implementation of agreements affecting Universal Health Coverage (UHC) staff, employment concerns and the harmonisation of employment processes across counties.
Kenya National Union of Nurses secretary general Maurice Opetu, who addressed the protesters outside Afya House, said the strike would continue until the outstanding issues are addressed, adding that demonstrations would be rolled out in different regions across the country in the coming days.
The protest attracted dozens of nurses, who called for dialogue and a lasting solution to issues they say have remained unresolved for years.
Opetu maintained that negotiations should continue at the national level to facilitate a comprehensive resolution to the dispute.
