Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition will hold a key meeting next Monday to chart its political direction ahead of the 2027 General Election, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka has announced, with retired President Uhuru Kenyatta set to chair the party's Council.
Kalonzo, who is the Azimio party leader, said the coalition's leadership had already started working on a broad strategy for the next election, but would reveal more details after the meeting.
He spoke on Thursday at the SKM Command Centre after meeting members of the Linda Mwananchi movement, including Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino.
"I want to conclude by wishing Linda Mwananchi well. We are waiting for you on Monday," Kalonzo said.
He said the Azimio Council, chaired by retired President Uhuru Kenyatta, and the party's executive, which he chairs as party leader, would meet to discuss the way forward.
"We have a meeting on Monday. The Council, which is chaired by retired President Uhuru Kenyatta, and the executive, which I chair also as party leader, we have almost clearly visualised the way forward, but we continue to share that with you," he said.
Kalonzo said the coalition was looking at the 2027 contest through the lens of the political unity that propelled the opposition to power in 2002.
"I think we have a 2002 moment," he said, recalling the political mood that preceded the National Rainbow Coalition's victory over the Kanu government.
He said politicians who attempted to frustrate the wishes and expectations of Kenyans during that period were punished politically.
"I remember that time, anyone of us trying to look backwards, wananchi walikuwa wanamuangalia vizuri kabisa. Yeyote angetubuthu kuharibu hisia na matarajio ya Wakenya angejipata pahali pabaya sana," he said.
Kalonzo's remarks came as opposition figures continue to intensify consultations over possible cooperation ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The Wiper leader appeared to signal that Azimio was preparing to engage with other opposition formations while maintaining its own internal structures.
He also welcomed Linda Mwananchi's efforts, urging the movement's leaders and supporters to maintain pressure ahead of the polls.
"In the meantime, fight hard, don't relent. I gave you some of the foot soldiers," Kalonzo said.
He noted that ODM Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna was among the leaders associated with the movement and said Azimio was open to continued engagement.
The meeting comes amid heightened political activity as opposition parties seek to forge a united front to challenge President William Ruto in 2027.
Kalonzo has in recent months positioned himself as one of the leading figures in the opposition and has repeatedly called for unity to avoid splitting the anti-government vote.
His announcement of Monday's meeting is likely to attract attention as parties begin firming up alliances and possible presidential arrangements less than 14 months before the General Election.
Kalonzo said the discussions would continue beyond the Monday meeting, with the coalition expected to communicate its strategy to Kenyans as consultations progress.
