A four-year-old boy died after slipping into a neighbour's fish pond while trying to cut oranges, in one of three separate drowning incidents reported across the country on Monday.
The tragic incident happened in the Kiutine area of Kiengu Sub-county, Meru County, leaving a family in mourning.
Police said the child's father reported that his son accidentally fell into the neighbour's fish pond while attempting to cut oranges nearby.
Officers who visited the scene confirmed the incident before processing and photographing the area.
A preliminary examination found no visible external injuries, indicating the boy most likely died from drowning.
The body was moved to Nyambene Level 4 Hospital Mortuary, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination.
Police said investigations are ongoing.
In a separate incident in Machakos County, a 66-year-old man drowned after falling into a well while fetching water in Mulingana 'C' Village, Ndithini Sub-county.
Police identified the deceased as Muia Kithome.
Investigators who visited the scene established that he fell into the well while drawing water.
A preliminary examination found no visible external injuries.
Police said the deceased had a history of epilepsy, raising the possibility that he may have suffered a seizure before falling into the well.
However, the exact cause of death will be established through investigations and a post-mortem examination.
The scene was documented before the body was retrieved and taken to Daniel Comboni Mission Mortuary for an autopsy.
Police are investigating the incident.
Meanwhile, in Lamu County, a 21-year-old woman drowned while fetching water from a dam in Lamu West Sub-county in what police believe may have been triggered by an epileptic seizure.
The incident occurred on Monday morning at Sendemke B Village, about three kilometres southwest of Witu Police Station.
Police said the woman, identified as Dorothy Gaseli, had left home alone to fetch water from a nearby dam after being reported missing by a resident of Taa area within Nyongoro Ranch.
Her body was later found floating in the dam.
Investigators established that she had been living with epilepsy and is believed to have suffered a seizure before falling into the water.
A physical examination revealed no visible external injuries. However, white foam around the mouth and nose was consistent with drowning.
Crime scene personnel documented the area before the body was taken to Mpeketoni Sub-County Referral Hospital Mortuary, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination.
Police said investigations are ongoing, although preliminary findings indicate the death was an accidental drowning.
