Tusker FC head into today's decisive CECAFA Kagame Cup Group C clash against Rayon Sports knowing anything less than victory could leave their semi-final hopes hanging by a thread.
The Kenyan side opened their campaign with a disappointing 2-0 defeat to Sudan's Al Hilal, while hosts Rayon Sports began with a convincing 2-0 victory over KVZ FC, moving level on points with the Sudanese champions.
With only the three group winners and the best runner-up progressing to the semi-finals, the stakes could hardly be higher at Kigali Pelé Stadium.
Despite the defeat, Tusker coach Julien Mette believes the scoreline failed to reflect his team's performance.
"I was positively surprised by what I saw from this team," Mette said. "Considering how recently this squad came together, we created enough chances to get something from the match."
The French tactician insists the Kagame Cup remains an important testing ground ahead of the Sportpesa League and CAF Confederation Cup campaigns.
"We are building a new team. Every match helps us understand each other better and improve our chemistry," he added.
Captain Abud Omar echoed his coach's confidence, insisting the players have already shifted their focus to the must-win encounter.
"We know what is at stake. The opening result disappointed us, but our response on the pitch against Rayon Sports is what matters now," Omar said.
Tusker have integrated several new arrivals into the squad, including Nigerian striker Victor Mbaoma, and Mette believes patience will be rewarded as the group develops.
"Our finishing let us down more than anything else. The opportunities were there, but we lacked the composure needed at this level," the coach noted.
He also challenged his experienced players to shoulder greater responsibility.
"The senior players must lead by example because these younger players are looking to them for guidance during difficult moments," Mette said.
Omar believes the dressing room has responded positively to that message.
"We have spoken honestly among ourselves. Everyone accepts responsibility, and now we must prove it with our performance," the captain remarked.
Across the technical area, Rayon Sports coach Francis Haringingo is determined to maintain the momentum generated by his team's opening victory.
"The first match was never going to be easy because our opponents defended very deep," Haringingo said. "Patience was the key to unlocking the game."
The Burundian tactician praised the influence of his substitutes after they helped secure the three points.
"The players who came from the bench changed the rhythm of the match. That competition for places makes us stronger," he explained.
Rayon captain Nshimiyimana Emmanuel expects another demanding contest despite Tusker's defeat in their opening fixture.
"Tusker remain one of the strongest clubs in the region. We cannot judge them by one result," Emmanuel said.
Playing before a passionate home crowd gives Rayon an added advantage, but Haringingo insists emotion alone will not be enough.
"We respect Tusker because they have quality and experience. We must remain disciplined from the first whistle until the last," he said.
The hosts have retained much of the side that comfortably dispatched KVZ FC and are expected to continue with their aggressive pressing style and quick transitions.
"Our objective is to control possession without losing our defensive balance. That balance is what won us the first match," Haringingo added.
Emmanuel believes leadership on the pitch will be crucial if Rayon are to edge closer to the semi-finals. "Our supporters expect commitment and discipline. If we stay united, we will give ourselves the best chance to win," the skipper said.
Tusker, meanwhile, know only a positive result will keep qualification firmly within their own hands before the final round of Group C fixtures.
"We still control our destiny if we perform to our potential," Omar insisted. "The belief inside this squad has not changed."
Mette shares that optimism despite the pressure surrounding the fixture. "I expect a reaction from my players because I know the quality that exists in this squad. This is another opportunity to show our progress," he said.
Haringingo, however, believes his side must seize the opportunity presented by playing at home. "We have started well, but nothing has been achieved yet. We need another strong performance because qualification is never guaranteed after one victory," he concluded.
