Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna speaking on Citizen TV's The Explainer on July 28, 2026/ SCREENGRABNairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has left open the possibility of a 2027 presidential bid, saying he would not reject the opportunity if it emerged as a collective decision backed by Kenyans.
Speaking on Citizen TV's The Explainer on Tuesday night, the senator said the Linda Mwananchi movement was seriously considering fielding a presidential candidate in the next General Election, but stressed that such a decision would not be made by one individual.
"If the people feel that this is the best way for us to proceed, we will not say no. We will proceed with the people," Sifuna said.
He said Linda Mwananchi had grown into a significant political movement after months of public engagement across the country, adding that it was responding to calls from Kenyans seeking an alternative political direction.
Sifuna said the movement had toured 16 counties and planned to visit every part of the country before making major political decisions.
"We are very strongly considering the prospect of running a presidential candidate. That is something that is clear. It's coming from the people themselves. They are asking us because there are things they see that we represent," he said.
He maintained that any decision on who would fly the movement's presidential flag would be made collectively.
"I don't make unilateral decisions. That decision has to be made together with the people so that it is a decision that is owned by everyone and not just Sifuna."
The senator said Linda Mwananchi had reached its current position by listening to ordinary Kenyans and would continue consulting widely before settling on its political roadmap.
"I have gotten to this place because of all the support that we've gotten from young people, those online, the Bunge la Mwananchi forums and supporters across the country. We will make that decision together."
While declining to declare his candidature, Sifuna said he had never shied away from responsibility.
"I am not one to run away from responsibility. If the people feel this is the best way for us to proceed, we will not say no."
He said the movement was receiving a positive reception at its public meetings, which he said reflected a desire among Kenyans for a different approach to governance.
"There is a general yearning in the country for things to be done differently. People are telling us they want to see a different country and believe the Linda Mwananchi team can deliver that change."
Sifuna said the movement wanted more time to assess its support across the country before making final decisions on its presidential ticket.
"It is not easy to run a presidential campaign. We have not even done 20 counties. We need to ascertain that the support is solid."
He said Linda Mwananchi was preparing to transition into a more structured political outfit as supporters and aspirants sought to participate in the 2027 elections.
Sifuna said the movement intended to field candidates for all elective positions, including Member of County Assembly, Member of Parliament, senator, governor and president.
"Our responsibility now is to get organised so that everybody knows how to plug in, whether they want to volunteer, donate or run for office."
He also said the movement was attracting members from different political parties and that discussions on its future political vehicle would continue as preparations for the 2027 General Election progressed.
