As erratic weather patterns continue to threaten food production across Kenya, a local agribusiness company is championing climate-smart farming technologies to help smallholder farmers adapt to the effects of climate change.

Faulu Irrigation is providing modern irrigation and water management technologies aimed at improving yields, conserving water and reducing crop losses.

It has quickly established itself as an emerging player in Kenya's irrigation sector, offering solutions that enable farmers to produce food throughout the year despite changing weather conditions.

Chief Executive Officer Mutua Kyalo said modern irrigation is becoming increasingly important as Kenya's agriculture sector, which contributes more than 20 per cent of the country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP), remains heavily dependent on unreliable rainfall.

He said adopting irrigation technologies would help farmers increase production, improve food security and earn better returns while using water more efficiently.

"Kenya's future food security depends on how quickly we embrace sustainable farming technologies. Our mission is to ensure every farmer, whether small-scale or commercial, has access to affordable irrigation systems and modern farming solutions that increase yields while conserving water," Kyalo said.

"We do not simply supply irrigation equipment. We work closely with farmers from project design to implementation to ensure they realise the full value of their investment. Our goal is to help farmers harvest throughout the year despite changing weather patterns," he said.

Farmers using the company's technologies say the investment has significantly improved their productivity and resilience.

Mary Wanjiku, a tomato farmer in Nakuru County, said switching to drip irrigation had reduced water consumption while almost doubling her harvest.

"I used to rely entirely on rainfall, but today I can grow tomatoes throughout the year. My harvest has nearly doubled and I spend much less on water," she said.

In Nyamira County, maize and vegetable farmer Peter Onyancha said installing a sprinkler irrigation system had enabled him to withstand prolonged dry spells.

"The unpredictable rains no longer worry me. I can plan my farming calendar with confidence, and my income has become more stable," he said.

Farmers in Nyamira county learn climate-smart farming techniques aimed at improving crop yields and building resilience against climate change.

For Agnes Mutheu, a horticultural farmer in Machakos County, greenhouse and shade net technologies have improved both the quality and consistency of her produce.

"The greenhouse protects my crops from harsh weather and pests, while the shade nets help young seedlings thrive. I now produce vegetables that easily meet market standards," she said.

As climate change continues to disrupt traditional planting seasons, agricultural experts increasingly view irrigation and other climate-smart technologies as critical tools for strengthening food security, reducing post-harvest losses and building resilience across Kenya's farming sector.

Faulu Irrigation supplies a range of agricultural technologies, including drip irrigation kits, sprinkler systems, rain guns, rain hose irrigation systems, button drippers, solar-powered irrigation systems, filtration kits and water pumps.

It also designs and installs customised irrigation systems tailored to a farmer's crops, farm size, water source and budget.

Beyond irrigation, the company provides wooden and metallic greenhouses, shade nets, bird nets, solar crop dryers and high-density polyethylene (HDPE) dam liners used for water harvesting, fish ponds, sewage management and industrial applications.
