Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and former Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi / HANDOUTDeputy President Kithure Kindiki has asked former Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi to seek out former President Uhuru Kenyatta and encourage him to engage fellow retired leaders in talks aimed at fostering unity in the Mt Kenya region.
Speaking during an engagement in Meru County on Saturday, Kindiki said Kiraitu was best placed to deliver the message because of his political experience.
The Deputy President recalled his role as a lawyer for Uhuru Kenyatta and then-Deputy President William Ruto during their cases at the International Criminal Court (ICC), saying he remained grateful for the opportunity to serve them.
"Let me send you, Mr Kiraitu Murungi, because I know there is no one else who has a good CV like you. Even I have not reached there," Kindiki said.
"What you do is go and look for former President Uhuru Kenyatta. He is our leader, and we supported him one hundred per cent. When he had the Hague case with the then deputy president William Ruto, I was his lawyer, and we did our best. He came back to Kenya and became President, and Ruto became president as well.”
Kindiki urged Kiraitu to ask Uhuru to meet with other retired leaders and help restore unity in the region.
He insisted that leaders from the Mt Kenya region should remain united and rally behind President William Ruto's re-election bid.
"Look for our leader, Uhuru, and tell him to sit down and have a talk as the retired leaders. The country should be the way it was and ensure that the community stays the way it was. We will not accept Mt Kenya to be divided. We shall speak one language and that is two terms for President Ruto," Kindiki said.
The Deputy President made the remarks during a visit to Kithoka, Meru County, where he had earlier visited retired Methodist Church Presiding Bishop Rev. Lawi Imathiu to wish him well and thank God for his health.
In June, Ruto appointed Murungi as the Non-Executive Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Competition Authority of Kenya.
The appointment was made through a gazette notice dated June 26, 2026, and takes effect immediately.
"In exercise of the powers conferred by section 10 (1) (a) of the Competition Act, as read together with section 51 (1) of the Interpretation and General Provisions Act, I, William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces, appoint— Kiraitu Murungi to be the Non-Executive Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Competition Authority," the gazette notice reads.
Murungi will serve for a period of three years, from June 26, 2026.
