Head of Public Service Felix Koskei has urged Mt Elgon farmers to move away from overreliance on traditional food crops and adopt high-value alternatives. Speaking at Friends Moi Kaptama Girls School in Mt Elgon, he noted that despite the region’s fertile volcanic soils and a favourable climate, many households remain economically strained due to declining returns from traditional food crops. Koskei identified maize, potatoes, onions and cabbages as less profitable crops, encouraging diversification into coffee, macadamia, avocado and tea for better income.
