The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has paid tribute to former East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) member and constitutional reform advocate Abubakar Zein, describing him as a distinguished patriot, reformist and statesman whose service left a lasting mark on Kenya's democratic journey.
In a condolence message dated July 10, 2026, UDA Secretary General Hassan Omar Hassan said Zein's death was a great loss to the nation, his family, friends and colleagues.
"It is with profound sorrow that I extend my heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and colleagues following the passing of Hon. Abubakar Zein. Kenya has lost a distinguished patriot, reformist and statesman whose lifelong service left an enduring mark on our nation's democratic journey," Hassan said.
Omar recalled working with Zein during the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO), where he said the late leader demonstrated unwavering commitment to consensus-building and constitutionalism.
"I had the privilege of working with Hon. Zein during the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO), where his unwavering commitment to consensus-building was evident. He will be remembered for his principled leadership and steadfast dedication to constitutionalism, having played an important role in the constitutional reform process that culminated in the promulgation of the Constitution of Kenya, 2010," Hassan added.
The party noted that Zein was also a respected champion of Kenya's creative and cultural sector.
Through his work as an accomplished artist and cultural advocate, the party said, he used the power of art to promote justice, civic engagement and national cohesion.
The party further highlighted Zein's contributions as a pro-democracy activist, noting that his activism led to his appointment as a Commissioner of the Constitution of Kenya Review Commission (CKRC), reflecting the confidence placed in his integrity, intellect and commitment to democratic governance.
As a former member of the EALA, Zein also made significant contributions to regional integration, democratic governance and the advancement of the East African Community.
"We have lost a rare leader who elevated public discourse through intellect, integrity, creativity and an unyielding moral compass. His life was defined by service, courage and an abiding belief in a just, democratic and inclusive Kenya," Hassan said.
He added that Zein's passing was also a personal loss, describing him as a dear friend and colleague.
"Personally, I have lost a dear friend and a colleague. Our nation has lost a committed patriot, a distinguished human rights advocate and a gentle giant of constitutional reforms," Hassan said.
Hassan prayed for strength and comfort for Zein's family as they mourn their loved one.
