Jamaican dancehall star Spice has reflected on the life-threatening medical emergency that nearly claimed her life in 2022, revealing that the experience continues to remind her how fortunate she is to be alive.
Speaking during an interview on Funky Friday with Cam, the Grammy-nominated singer, whose real name is Grace Hamilton, said a scar across her chest symbolises what she describes as “a touch from God” after doctors were forced to perform emergency surgery to save her life.

“I have a scar on my chest that I call a touch from God because they had to open me up to save my life. Every day I see it, I’m reminded that I’m chosen, that I’m loved by God and that I’m blessed to have a second chance in life.”
The singer said her family later told her that doctors had prepared them for the worst.
“My family tells me the doctors gave up and said they should come and say goodbye to me. That was a very dark space for me in 2022 when I almost died.”

During the interview, Spice explained that she initially underwent what she described as a successful hernia operation. However, around 10 days later, her condition suddenly deteriorated.
She recalled developing severe vomiting before being rushed back to hospital, where doctors discovered she required another emergency operation.
“I had my surgery, and it was successful. After 10 days I started throwing up. I was rushed to hospital, and they said I had to do an emergency surgery because what I was throwing up was faeces.”

The entertainer said doctors later suspected that scar tissue from an earlier tummy tuck procedure may have contributed to the complications she experienced.
Her latest account expands on details she first shared publicly after the incident, when she confirmed that a damaged hernia had led to sepsis—a life-threatening condition caused by the body’s extreme response to infection.
At the time, she also dismissed widespread rumours that she had suffered a heart attack or fallen into a coma.
Turning pain into perspective
Since recovering, Spice has frequently spoken about the emotional impact of surviving the health scare, describing it as a turning point in both her personal life and career.
She says the scar left behind is no longer something she hides, but a daily reminder of resilience, faith and survival.
“I’m just blessed to be here and to have a second chance in life.”
