The National Assembly's Departmental Committee on Sports and Culture has directed the Local Organising Committee to strictly adhere to the Confederation of African Football timelines for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations ( Afcon).
The committee warned that there will be zero tolerance for delays in delivering key infrastructure projects, including Talanta Sports City.
The committee also demanded accountability over expenditure on stadium consultancy services. It confirmed that Kenya has already paid the mandatory USD 30 million Afcon 2027 hosting fee, safeguarding the country's hosting rights as preparations intensify for the continental showpiece.
Appearing before the parliamentary committee on sports, Afcon 2027 Local Organising Committee chairperson Nicholas Musonye underscored the scale of the tournament. He said its success would only be possible through coordinated action across government.
" Afcon is a huge, huge event in our history. For us to succeed, we have put inter-agency coordination together," Musonye said.
He said successful Afcon hosts rely on a whole-of-government model involving ministries and agencies working in unison.
"Governments, ministries, county government ministries and other coordinating agencies have come together. Afcon has been implemented through a whole-of-government approach across the world, with ministries responsible for Sports, Interior, Health, Tourism, Foreign Affairs, Immigration, Treasury and Transport, together with government agencies and national organising committees."
"The integrated approach enables timely decision-making and coordinated implementation of critical activities."
Musonye said every ministry has a clearly defined responsibility in delivering the tournament.
"We need ministries to coordinate. The Ministry of Interior has a role to play. The Ministry of Health has a role to play. The Ministry of Sports is the coordinating ministry, while others have a role to play in immigration and all that."
He said Kenya's hospitality industry remains one of the country's strongest assets ahead of Afcon 2027.
"Accommodation and hospitality is where our strength is. We are one of the best countries in accommodation and hospitality."
"So here, as chairman of the committee, I want to assure you we are on top of it."
Musonye added that Kenya's successful hosting of the African Nations Championship had demonstrated the country's accommodation capacity and strengthened confidence ahead of Afcon.
"We have the hotels that hosted CHAN successfully. Our hospitality is first class. Accommodation planning is well advanced, and using hotels successfully during CHAN has given us confidence as we prepare for Afcon."
Kenya will co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations alongside Uganda and Tanzania, marking the first time East Africa will stage Africa's premier football tournament.
