CybercrimeThe State Department for ICT and the Digital Economy has issued a fresh public advisory warning Kenyans to remain vigilant against malicious online links, saying cybercriminals continue to exploit deceptive messages to steal personal information, install malware, and compromise digital accounts.
In the advisory, the department said phishing attacks often rely on fake links disguised as legitimate websites, urging internet users to verify messages before clicking on any links.
The State Department warned that one of the most common tactics used by cybercriminals is creating a false sense of urgency to pressure victims into acting without thinking.
It advised the public to be cautious of messages containing urgent or threatening language, including claims that an account will be suspended or closed unless immediate action is taken.
The department also urged Kenyans to carefully inspect website addresses before opening them, noting that malicious websites often imitate legitimate organisations by using web addresses with slight misspellings or unfamiliar domain extensions.
According to the advisory, users should also be wary of unexpected prizes, financial rewards, or offers that appear too good to be true, as such messages are commonly used to lure victims into revealing sensitive information.
The State Department further identified generic greetings as another warning sign, advising users to treat messages addressed as "Dear Customer" or "Hello User" with more caution than those personalised with their names.
The advisory emphasised that taking a few moments to examine a message before clicking on any links can significantly reduce the risk of falling victim to cybercrime.
"A moment of caution can prevent a cyber incident," the department said.
The State Department encouraged members of the public to remain cyber-aware by verifying suspicious messages, avoiding unsolicited links, and staying alert to common phishing tactics used by online fraudsters.
The advisory forms part of the government's ongoing public awareness campaign aimed at strengthening cybersecurity and promoting safer internet use as digital services continue to expand across the country.
