The Rise of the Tequila Experience
One major driver of this change is the agave revolution. Tequila is now the third fastest-growing spirits category in East Africa. Globally, it is recognized as the fastest-growing premium spirit.
Despite this growth, 87% of Kenyan consumers have only ever taken tequila as a quick shot. A new movement is now working to reposition the drink as a sophisticated sipping experience, similar to fine whisky.
Nairobi is preparing for its first-ever dedicated tequila festival this winter. Known as "The Agave Affair," the event takes place on 25 July 2026, at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC).
The festival is designed as a 10-hour journey. It begins at 4 PM and runs until 2 AM. This timing caters to those who prefer earlier "sundowner" events that transition into an early evening.
Agave Chic and Golden Hour Vibes
The event encourages a specific aesthetic known as Agave Chic. Guests are expected to wear earthy tones, agave greens, and linen sets. Organisers describe the desired vibe as "Coachella meets Nairobi elegance."
Attendees will follow a "sonic journey" that evolves with the sun. The evening begins with warm Afrobeats during the Golden Hour. As the night progresses, the music shifts into soulful Amapiano, Afro-house, and nostalgic R&B.
More Than Just Drinks
The festival layout includes a central "Main Tent," individual brand tents, and a dedicated Chill Zone. Guests can discover at least three new tequila experiences through curated mixology.
To elevate the spirit, a food court will serve tacos, BBQ, and sliders specifically paired with different tequilas. There is also a "Sip Slow, Live Loud" lounge for those seeking a more relaxed atmosphere.
The Agave Affair is a production by Radio Africa Events in partnership with the KICC. It aims to educate over 2,000 young professionals and mixology enthusiasts on the versatility of the blue agave plant.
