Migori Youth players celebrate after their 1-0 win over Kisumu All Stars last weekend/MIGORI YOUTH Migori Youth stand just one victory away from securing promotion to the FKF Premier League as they prepare to host fellow promotion contenders Equity Bank in a crucial National Super League clash on Sunday at Awendo Green Stadium.
The league leaders can confirm their place in next season’s top flight with a win over the fourth-placed Bankers in their penultimate match of the campaign. Head coach Sammy Owano acknowledged the pressure surrounding the fixture but insisted his side is fully focused on getting the job done.
“We want to make sure we collect maximum points at home before travelling to face 3K FC in our final match next weekend,” said Owano.
The tactician expects a stern test from Equity Bank, who are also chasing promotion, but maintains his side has only one objective. “Equity are a good team and currently in top form. However, for us, there is only Plan A. There is no Plan B in this game,” he said.
Migori head into the encounter boasting an unbeaten home record this season, a run Owano is keen to preserve. “We want to end the season with our home unbeaten record intact. The boys must give their all because Equity are equally fighting for promotion,” he added.
The hosts will once again look to leading scorer Syphas Otieno for inspiration. The striker has netted 20 goals this season and remains in contention for the NSL Golden Boot.
“Syphas is one of the best young strikers in the country. I believe he will wear the national team colours very soon,” said Owano. Equity Bank coach John Benzo is equally optimistic ahead of the showdown, citing his side’s impressive away form.
“We have performed better away from home than at home this season. We are travelling to Migori for a win because we want to finish in the top three and secure promotion,” said Benzo.
Migori Youth reclaimed the top spot after the Sports Disputes Tribunal overturned a decision by the FKF Appeals Board to dock the club four points for allegedly fielding an ineligible player against Kabati Youth.
They currently lead the standings on 77 points, ahead of second-placed 3K FC, while Mombasa United are third on 72 points. Equity Bank sit fourth with 71 points.
Elsewhere, second-placed 3K FC travel to face already relegated Mwatate United in Taita Taveta County, while Mombasa United host former FKF Premier League side Nzoia Sugar at KPA Mbaraki Sports Club
