Migori Youth during a previous match/ HANDOUT Migori Youth vs Equity Bank
[Awendo Green Stadium, Sunday at 3 pm]
The National Super League takes centre stage this Sunday as the promotion race heads into its penultimate chapter, with leaders Migori Youth facing one of the division's most in-form sides, Equity Bank. The build-up to this clash has been dominated by drama away from the pitch.
On June 2, the FKF Appeals Committee docked Migori Youth three points for fielding an ineligible player, slashing their tally from 77 to 74 points and leaving them just one point clear of second-placed 3K FC.
What once looked like a comfortable march to promotion has suddenly become a nerve-racking sprint to the finish line. Four teams remain separated by just six points with only two rounds of fixtures left. Despite the setback, Migori Youth remain formidable at Awendo Green Stadium. Their outstanding campaign has carried them to the brink of top-flight football, and they arrive on the back of three consecutive victories. Yet if there is one side capable of spoiling the party, it is Equity Bank.
The Bankers are arguably the most dangerous team in the division right now, riding a remarkable 14-match unbeaten streak. Even more impressive is the defensive wall they have built during that run, keeping 13 clean sheets while conceding just one goal. Equity's backline has become one of the league's defining stories, combining discipline, organisation and resilience in equal measure. However, Migori Youth will draw strength from what promises to be a raucous home atmosphere, with Awendo expected to be packed to the rafters for one of the biggest matches in the club's history.
Prediction: Migori Youth 1-1 Equity Bank
Mombasa United vs Nzoia Sugar
[KPA Sports Club, Sunday, 3 pm]
Mombasa United know there is little room for error when they host Nzoia Sugar in a fixture that could prove pivotal in the race for promotion.
Currently third, Mombasa United remain firmly in the thick of a fiercely contested four-team battle for top-flight places. Victory here would move them a step closer to securing a Premier League berth before a potentially decisive final-day assignment away from home.
The hosts will be eager to respond after suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat to Luanda Villa last weekend, a result that briefly stalled their momentum at the worst possible time. For Nzoia Sugar, the pressure is considerably lighter.
The Sugar Millers occupy the safety of mid-table, comfortably clear of relegation trouble but equally distant from promotion contention. Their campaign is effectively winding down, though recent signs suggest they are still capable of causing problems.
A convincing 3-1 victory over Fortune Sacco ended a frustrating six-match winless run and restored some confidence to the squad. They also possess a well-drilled defensive structure that has often made life difficult for opponents. The reverse fixture in October produced an entertaining 2-2 draw, and Nzoia will hope to replicate that stubbornness once again. Still, Mombasa United's urgency, coupled with their outstanding home record, makes them favourites. Expect Nzoia to frustrate and delay, but the hosts should eventually find a way through.
Prediction: Mombasa United 2-0 Nzoia Sugar
Mwatate United vs 3K FC
[Wundanyi Stadium, Sunday, 3 pm]
This is the classic tale of contrasting ambitions.
While 3K FC are chasing an automatic ticket to the Premier League, Mwatate United are fighting for survival at the opposite end of the table.
Second-placed 3K sit on 73 points and know that any slip-up could prove costly in a title race that has become increasingly intense following Migori Youth's points deduction. With only two matches remaining, every point carries enormous significance. Mwatate's situation is equally desperate, though for very different reasons.
Rooted near the foot of the standings on 23 points, they have endured a difficult campaign and enter this contest on a seven-match winless run. Goals have been hard to come by, while positive results have become increasingly scarce. The earlier meeting between the two sides produced a gritty 1-1 draw in Embu, offering Mwatate some encouragement. However, much has changed since then. 3K FC have developed into one of the league's most consistent performers, particularly away from home, while Mwatate's form has continued to decline as the relegation battle tightened around them. With promotion within touching distance, 3K are unlikely to let this opportunity slip.
Prediction: Mwatate United 0-2 3K FC
