Controversial Kenyan boxer Mbavu the Destroyer has opened up about his recent defeat, revealing how a strategy inspired by Mike Tyson led to his downfall.
Speaking in a recent interview with Dr Ofweneke, the fighter explained the tactical errors that cost him the win against his rival, Majembe, during their early April bout.
Mbavu, known for his aggressive persona, remains adamant that the loss was a result of timing rather than a lack of skill. Despite the result, his confidence appears unshaken as he eyes a return to the ring.
The "Iron Mike" Inspiration
During the QuickFire segment, Mbavu was asked which boxer inspires his "Destroyer mentality." His answer was immediate. He named Mike Tyson as his "one and only" inspiration.
The boxer explained that he has spent a significant amount of time studying Tyson’s style and movement. This influence dictates how he approaches his fights, focusing on explosive finishes rather than winning on points.
When asked if he prefers winning by knockout or by making an opponent quit, Mbavu chose the knockout every time.
"In boxing, you have to find the time... that is what I was trying to do," Mbavu said, explaining his focus on the knockout.
The Round 5 Strategy
The April fight between Mbavu and Majembe was one of the most talked-about local boxing matches of the year. Mbavu revealed that his plan was to play a "mind game" with his opponent. He intentionally held back his power in the opening stages of the fight.
Mbavu claimed he allowed Majembe to "play" and use his energy in the first round. He intended to wait until his opponent was fatigued before launching a decisive attack.
"I said, let him play with my body in Round 1. I was going to start my work around Round 4 or 5 knowing that by then he would have been tired, just like the way Mike Tyson used to do," Mbavu explained.
He believed that by that stage, Majembe would be exhausted, leaving him vulnerable to the Tyson-esque "knockout" blow he had been preparing.
The Controversial Finish
The plan did not go as expected. Instead of reaching the later rounds, the fight ended early when Majembe caught Mbavu with a powerful strike. Mbavu described this as Majembe finding a "weak point" just as he thought his opponent was tiring.
However, the boxer has raised serious allegations regarding the nature of the knockout. He claims that the decisive blow was illegal. Mbavu stated during the interview that Majembe hit him below the belt.
He described the move as a foul play, suggesting the victory was not earned fairly.
"He hit me below the belt... he was aiming to finish me," the boxer claimed.
Demanding a Rematch
Despite the official loss, Mbavu does not consider himself truly beaten. He told Dr Ofweneke that he has no interest in facing any other opponent until he settles the score with Majembe.
He described Majembe as his "dream opponent" for a rematch and vowed not to retire until they meet again. Mbavu appears convinced that without the alleged low blow, the "Tyson technique" would have eventually secured him the win.
