The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested a former employee of the Office of the Auditor General as part of an intensified crackdown on the use of forged academic certificates in public service employment.
In a statement issued on Thursday, May 21, 2026, the anti-graft agency said the arrest followed investigations into allegations that the former employee secured employment using fake academic qualifications.
According to the EACC, investigations established that the former public officer allegedly forged a Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) certificate purportedly issued by a secondary school and later used the document to obtain employment at the Office of the Auditor General (OAG).
“Investigations conducted by the Commission established that she allegedly forged KCSE academic documents and successfully used them in her application for employment at the Office of the Auditor General,” the statement read.
The Commission said the suspect is now facing several criminal charges, including forgery, uttering a false document, and fraudulent acquisition of public property.
EACC stated that upon completion of investigations, the case file was forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), which approved the prosecution of the suspect.
The anti-corruption agency further alleged that the accused fraudulently earned Sh5.8 million in salaries and benefits during the period of employment at the Office of the Auditor General.
“The Director of Public Prosecutions approved charges of forgery, uttering a false document, and fraudulent acquisition of public property amounting to Sh5,838,790, being salaries allegedly earned by the suspect during her employment at the OAG,” the Commission said in the statement.
The suspect was arrested on Thursday and later released on a cash bail of Sh50,000 pending arraignment in court.
EACC also disclosed that it intends to institute civil recovery proceedings aimed at recovering all salaries and benefits allegedly obtained through the fake academic qualifications.
The arrest adds to a growing list of cases being pursued by the anti-graft agency involving forged academic papers used to gain entry into public institutions.
The former employee is expected to be arraigned in court once formal charges are filed by the prosecution.
The incident comes days after the commission arrested and charged a Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) employee over allegations of forging academic certificates to secure university admission, employment, and salary increments.
The suspect, an accountant, was arraigned before the Kisii Anti-Corruption Court, where he faced charges of forgery, uttering a false document, and fraudulent acquisition of public property amounting to Sh3.9 million, being salaries allegedly earned during his employment.
According to EACC, investigations established that the accused obtained a mean grade of C- in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations but allegedly altered the result to a C+ in order to gain admission to Kisii University.
The Commission said the suspect subsequently used the falsified KCSE certificate to enrol for a Bachelor of Commerce degree, which he later used to pursue career advancement within the public service.
It added that the case file was forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions, who approved the institution of criminal proceedings.
“The DPP reviewed the file and concurred with our recommendation to charge the suspect with forgery, uttering a false document, and fraudulent acquisition of public funds,” the Commission said.
The accused denied all charges and was released on a cash bail of Sh200,000 or an alternative bond of Sh500,000 with a surety of the same amount.
