Three suspects, including a police officer accused of robbing a businesswoman of more than Sh14 million in cash and valuables, have been released on bond.
Eldoret resident magistrate Daniel Sitati granted the suspects bond after considering applications filed by their lawyers. The three had been in remand custody for close to a month.
The accused — Mahatt Abdullahi, Ernest Odongo alias Party, and police officer Philip Edasi attached to Eldoret Central Police Station — are linked to an armed robbery incident involving a trader of Somali origin.
The court released each suspect on a Sh1 million bond with two sureties of a similar amount or an alternative bail of Sh400,000.
“I am admitting each of the accused persons to a bond of Sh1 million with two sureties of a similar amount or a cash bail of Sh400,000 each,” Sitati ruled.
The magistrate ordered the suspects to report to Eldoret Central police station every 14 days and barred them from interfering with witnesses or travelling outside the court’s jurisdiction without permission.
The three are accused of robbing Suad Zaid Abdi on April 4, 2026, at Miti Moja area along the Eldoret-Webuye highway while armed with a pistol.
According to court documents, the stolen items included $105,200 (about Sh13.4 million), Sh1.31 million in Kenyan currency, a Samsung A4S phone valued at Sh32,000 and an iPhone 11 Pro Max valued at Sh150,000.
The prosecution told the court the suspects used violence during the robbery.
Sitati said the amount stolen and the alleged use of a firearm justified the stringent bond terms, warning the accused that failure to comply with court orders would lead to cancellation of their bond.
