Kapsabet County Referral Hospital is set to increase its bed capacity from 200 to 500 following the equipping of its new 300-bed Mother and Child Unit at a cost of Sh392 million.
Principal Secretary for Medical Services Ouma Oluga inspected the facility on Sunday ahead of its official launch by President William Ruto.
The Ministry of Health equipped the unit through the National Equipment Service Programme, which will also expand the hospital’s theatre capacity from two to five.

The facility has also been equipped with a 10-bed adult intensive care unit (ICU), an 18-bed neonatal intensive care unit for premature babies and advanced diagnostic equipment.
The expansion is expected to increase the hospital’s capacity to provide specialised maternal and child healthcare services while improving access to critical care for patients in the region.

The development forms part of the government’s Universal Health Coverage reforms, which seek to improve access to quality healthcare through the Social Health Authority.
The Ministry of Health said the investment would help ensure Kenyans registered with and contributing to the Social Health Authority can access comprehensive healthcare services closer to their homes.
