The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has said it is reviewing video footage linked to the torching of a vehicle along Thika Road during Monday’s protests, as investigations into incidents of violence and destruction of property continue.
The statement comes after a black Mazda CX-5 was set ablaze in Githurai on Monday in the middle of the road, amid demonstrations tied to a nationwide transport strike over rising fuel prices. The incident unfolded as protests escalated in parts of Nairobi and its outskirts.
In its update, the DCI said it is examining digital evidence believed to show individuals suspected to have been involved in the incident.
“The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has received and is currently analysing viral video footage that is believed to feature individuals among the prime suspects involved in the torching of a Mazda CX-5 along Thika Road during today’s protests.”
The vehicle was seen engulfed in flames as thick smoke billowed into the air, adding to the disruption experienced by commuters on a day marked by transport paralysis, road blockages and sporadic confrontations between protesters and police.
Authorities have not confirmed the exact circumstances under which the car caught fire, including whether it was deliberately torched, abandoned, or caught up in the unrest.
The DCI said the incident posed serious risks to public safety and property, noting that investigations remain active.
“This incident not only endangered lives but also resulted in significant property damage, and investigations remain active. Detectives are diligently pursuing crucial leads aimed at identifying, and apprehending all those involved in this criminal act.”
Monday’s protests, linked to a nationwide strike by transport sector players opposing recent fuel price increases, paralysed movement across several major roads and towns.
Sections of Githurai and surrounding areas along Thika Road experienced heightened tension, with reports of barricaded roads, heavy police deployment as demonstrators expressed anger over the rising cost of fuel.
Transport stakeholders have blamed regulatory and government decisions for the higher prices, arguing that they have made operations unsustainable and driven up the cost of goods and services.
The DCI has urged members of the public to assist with information that could support ongoing investigations, especially those who may recognise individuals captured in the footage.

The National Police Service reiterated its commitment to maintaining order and ensuring accountability in cases where protests are allegedly used as cover for criminal acts.

No official casualties had been reported in connection with the burning vehicle by press time. Investigations remain ongoing.
