Status of access to school in Kenya

A new report titled the Usawa Agenda, released on May 12, 2026, has revealed a deepening education crisis in Kenya.

The data highlights a staggering disparity: 20% of refugee children are currently out of school, compared to 4.7% of Kenyan children.

The situation is most dire for the youngest learners; a shocking 56.5% of refugee children aged 4–5 are not enrolled in any educational programme.

The report identifies 4–5 years and 13–17 years as the most critical "at-risk" ages for Kenyans, while refugees face the highest barriers between 4–5 and 6–12 years.

Experts warn that without immediate intervention, thousands of children risk losing their future.
