Global growth in energy demand by source/ROSA MUMANYI

Global energy demand in 2025 is being driven largely by renewable sources, with solar photovoltaic (PV) emerging as the biggest contributor to growth, according to new data from the International Energy Agency (IEA).

The report shows solar PV accounts for 27 per cent of global energy demand growth, underscoring the accelerating shift toward cleaner energy as countries push to reduce carbon emissions and expand sustainable power generation.

Natural gas follows at 17 per cent, while oil and solid bioenergy and waste each contribute 15 per cent.

Coal and wind both account for 9 per cent of growth, while nuclear energy contributes 5 per cent. Liquid biofuels make up the smallest share at 2 per cent.

The findings reflect the growing global investment in renewable energy infrastructure, particularly solar and wind projects, amid rising electricity demand and climate concerns.
