Celebrated Nollywood actor Alexx Ekubo has died at the age of 40, leaving fans and colleagues across Africa mourning one of the industry’s most charismatic stars.

The award-winning actor reportedly died on Tuesday, May 12, after a long battle with kidney cancer. According to several Nigerian entertainment outlets, his condition worsened earlier this week before he was rushed to the hospital, where he later died while on life support.

Ekubo’s death came barely a month after he celebrated his 40th birthday on April 10.

Known for his charming smile, fashion sense, and strong screen presence, the actor built a successful career in Nollywood and featured in several hit productions, including Ladies Gang, Accidental Affair, Almajiri, Torment, Devil in Agbada, Aina, Lagos Cougars, Gold Diggin', and Undercover Lover.

He also became widely recognised outside film circles after appearing as “Johnny” in Yemi Alade’s hit song Johnny, one of Africa’s most-viewed music videos on YouTube.

Fans Became Concerned After His Disappearance

Ekubo’s sudden absence from social media in late 2024 had already sparked concern among fans.
The actor, once known for his lively online presence, humorous videos, and fashion content, quietly withdrew from the spotlight for months. His silence during his birthday celebrations this year further fuelled speculation about his health.
In December 2025, fellow actor IK Ogbonna shared a video of himself attending a wedding with Ekubo. Fans noted that the actor appeared physically weak, though no public explanation was given at the time.

Reports later emerged that the Nollywood star had been privately battling severe kidney complications.

Tosin Silverdam Confirms Death

Popular Nigerian blogger Tosin Silverdam was among the first public figures to publicly confirm the actor’s death.
In an emotional social media post, the blogger admitted he initially refused to believe the news.

“Popular Nollywood actor, Alexx Ekubo, is dead. Jesus Christ of Nazareth. I got the news this morning, some hours ago. Someone texted me and asked me, " Did you hear about Alex Ekubo that he's dead? I said, no, I didn't hear anything. It's not possible. I don't believe it. I waited, and I tried to reach out to some people. Sadly, it is true,” he wrote.

Talent manager and filmmaker Sam Olatunji also reportedly confirmed the actor’s death online.

Emotional Tributes Pour In

One fan, Pair.pressure, shared a lengthy tribute that quickly went viral.

“His energy and aura were light. A free spirit. He loved so loudly and gave everyone their flowers,” part of the tribute read.

The mourner praised the late actor’s love for food, fashion, dancing, and his pride in Igbo culture.

“Alexx lived. He unapologetically loved the finer things of life,” the emotional message continued.

Others admitted they were struggling to come to terms with the loss.

Lilysville wrote:

“Eternal rest grant unto him and let perpetual light shine on him.”

Dr. Jacquelinewabara posted:

“Sleep well, bro.”

K_izzy_ emotionally reacted to the reported cancer battle, saying:

“Cancer, I hate that disease.”

Meanwhile, Ugochi Celine Obogho added:

“Seriously, I will miss you, brother.”
