Billionaire Elon Musk has announced plans to give every child in the United States one share of his aerospace company SpaceX, in a proposed giveaway that could be worth more than $10 billion.

Musk made the announcement on Monday, October 19, 2026, through a post on X, where he described the planned distribution as the first of several gifts.

“Next year, I will give one of my SpaceX shares to every kid in America. This will be the first of many,” he wrote.

The announcement has attracted attention because of the scale of the proposed giveaway and the number of children who could benefit.

According to reports by Axios and The Washington Post, the United States has approximately 72 million children under the age of 18. At a share price of about $146, distributing one share to each child would amount to approximately $10.5 billion.

However, Musk has yet to explain exactly how the initiative will work or when the shares would be distributed.

Musk’s Plan Could Reach Millions of Children

If implemented as announced, the initiative would give millions of American children a direct financial stake in SpaceX.

Musk did not specify whether the proposed beneficiaries would include every child living in the United States or only American citizens. He also did not clarify the age limits that would determine eligibility.

The billionaire’s announcement leaves several practical questions unanswered, including how the shares would be transferred and whether parents or guardians would need to establish investment accounts for their children.

Reports have suggested that the existing Trump Accounts programme could provide a possible route for distributing the shares, although Musk has not publicly confirmed the arrangements.

SpaceX Shares Could Make the Gift Worth Billions

SpaceX is the aerospace company founded by Musk in 2002. Its operations include rocket launches, satellite internet services through Starlink, and other space-related technologies.

Musk holds a substantial stake in the company, meaning the proposed distribution would involve transferring part of his existing ownership to younger Americans.

Based on the estimated number of children and the reported share price, the proposed gift could be worth more than $10 billion.

The final value would depend on the number of eligible recipients and the company’s share price when the distribution takes place.

Announcement Follows Another Major Corporate Pledge

Musk’s announcement came shortly after artificial intelligence company Anthropic revealed plans to allocate a portion of its shares to a public benefit fund.

The development prompted a discussion about how wealthy technology companies and their founders could distribute some of their financial gains more directly to the public.

Musk subsequently expressed support for giving shares directly to people, before announcing his own proposed initiative.

He has described the planned distribution as the first of many gifts, but has not explained what other donations he may pursue.

For now, the announcement remains a pledge rather than a completed distribution. The eligibility rules, transfer process, and timeline will need to be clarified before American families can know whether their children will receive the proposed shares.
