Athi River East Subcounty police commander Anderson Mbae said the duo, a man and woman, died on the spot after the 14-passenger matatu rammed a stationary trailer at Total area in Katani, Machakos county, early Wednesday.
It was reported to the SNP police station as a fatal injury road traffic accident incident report.
"It occurred at about 12:10am at Total in Katani area along the Nairobi - Mombasa highway," Mbae said.
According to police, the accident involved a Toyota Hiace matatu and a trailer of a Mercedes-Benz Actros make.
Mbae said the deceased included a 45 - year - old woman and an unknown male adult.
They both died on the spot.
The accident, according to Mbae, occurred after the matatu that was being driven from Nairobi towards Mombasa direction rammed the trailer. It had 16 passengers on board.
"Upon reaching the location of the accident, the driver rammed into the said trailer that had stalled on the road with no warning road signs. As a result of the accident, two died on the spot while twelve others sustained various injuries," Mbae said.
The injuries included head cuts, fractured hands, deep cuts on foreheads, and chest injuries.
The woman who died sustained head injuries.
Police responded to the scene, processed it and removed the bodies to the Shalom Community hospital morgue, awaiting post-mortem and identification of the male passenger.
The wreckage was removed to the SNP police station pending inspection and necessary action.
Police have launched investigations into the incident.
The accident happened barely a week after a man and his wife, alongside their two children, cheated death along the same highway in Athi River after their car was smashed after it got involved in a road crash.
Dancun Musyoki said he was lucky to survive the accident. He never sustained any injury in the accident that occurred on May 3.
"I was given directions by traffic police officers to proceed with my journey. When I got to my lane, my car was hit from behind. I don't know where the vehicle that rammed into mine came from," Musyoki told the Star at the Athi River police station a day after he was involved in the accident.
His Toyota Probox was written off after it was badly damaged.
Musyoki said the impact was great.
Mbae said the accident involved at least seven motor vehicles.
Musyoki said he also hit a vehicle that was in front of him due to the impact.
The vehicle equally hit another.
He said he was from a collection exercise of money owed to him by his clients, whom he had earlier supplied with paints.
"I was with my two children, a boy and a girl, together with my wife. My wife sustained injuries, but she is okay. My children are safe," Musyoki said.
