3K FC technical bench and players during their game against Gucha Stars at Gusii Stadium/ANGWENYI GICHANA3K moved within touching distance of a maiden SportPesa League appearance after cutting the gap on the top two sides to just three points following a 2-0 victory over relegation-threatened Mully Children’s Family (MCF) on Wednesday.
The Embu-based side boosted their promotion hopes with a composed display at Moi Stadium in Embu, where Mark Kithome and Javan Njue found the back of the net. The victory marked coach Nicodemus Omasete’s 11th win since taking charge of the club in February, with 3K remaining unbeaten in the National Super League under his stewardship.
The result lifted 3K to 62 points, three behind joint leaders Migori Youth and Mombasa United, who are separated by only goal difference. Equity Bank dropped to fourth place on 61 points. 3K have emerged as one of the most balanced sides in the division, scoring a league-high 51 goals while conceding the fewest at 21 after 31 rounds.
Despite the tight race, Omasete remains confident his side can secure promotion to the top flight, with the top three teams earning qualification to the SportPesa League.
“As the league enters the most critical stage, most teams will drop points. We shall host the log leaders, Migori Youth and third-placed Equity Bank. We also have a game away against second-placed Mombasa United,” said Omasete.
He added, “We want to guard against any slip-ups in our remaining eight games. I believe we can qualify for the SportPesa League and win the NSL trophy. The battle for the NSL title is not between Migori Youth and Mombasa United.”
Omasete attributed the team’s resurgence to improved confidence levels and a sharper attacking approach. “There is no secret. We just restored the players' confidence and trained more on scoring early goals. We have scored in all our past 12 games,” he said.
The coach also backed the squad's depth as the promotion race intensifies. “As the league heads into the run-in, I have been rotating players and every player who features gives 100 per cent,” he noted.
3K now turn their attention to a crucial Mt Kenya Derby against Vincent Nyaberi’s Fortune Sacco at Moi Stadium in Embu. “It will be another difficult fixture, but we remain focused on getting the maximum points,” said Omasete.
Elsewhere, Fortune Sacco’s promotion hopes suffered a setback after they were held to a 1-1 draw by Soy United in a rescheduled fixture at Eldoret Showground. The result left Fortune Sacco sixth in the standings with 54 points.
