Mara Sugar players during a training session at their Enoosaen base/MARA SUGARMara Sugar interim coach Francis Xavier has set a clear benchmark of a top-10 finish in the FKF Premier League as his side looks to cap a steady campaign on a high.
The Cane Millers have already secured their top-flight status after a disciplined run of three consecutive 1-0 wins against Posta Rangers, Kariobangi Sharks, and former champions Tusker.
“Last season, we narrowly survived relegation. We didn’t want to be in the same situation this year, that’s why we set a top-10 finish,” he said.
The Enoosaen-based outfit currently sits ninth on the table with 40 points from 29 matches, firmly within reach of that target. Attention now shifts to Saturday’s fixture against title-chasing AFC Leopards at Nyayo National Stadium, where Xavier is banking on momentum and belief to drive another strong performance.
“I don’t know the importance of this game for my former club. However, we have trained and prepared to win. They have their ambitions, we also have ours,” said the former Leopards midfielder.
He credited the recent winning run for lifting confidence within the squad, noting that the team has grown steadily after a difficult mid-season transition. “In the mid-season transfer window, we lost more than 10 players, most of them from our starting 11. We recruited new players from lower-tier sides. Some had not even played in the NSL,” Xavier explained.
“I’m happy with the progress they have made so far. They are now confident and experienced. The gelling aspect is also there. The support of Mara Sugar management has also motivated them to give their all on and off the pitch.”
Xavier also singled out 21-year-old goalkeeper Joseph Ogenda for praise, highlighting both his performances and character. “He is a good, ambitious, disciplined, committed, and unique goalkeeper. His maturity at 21 is on another level,” he noted.
He revealed that Ogenda demonstrated remarkable commitment during a difficult personal moment, continuing to train and play for the team shortly before travelling for his mother’s burial. The CAF B License tactician took charge following Edward Manoah's departure and has been tasked with steering the team until the end of the season.
“At the end of the season, we shall sit with the management and discuss the future,” he added. Mara Sugar, who were not in league action last weekend, sharpened their edge with an emphatic 8-0 win over Chemelil Youth in a friendly match as they prepare for the Leopards test.
