Eric Omondi, often referred to as the "King of Comedy" in Africa, has shared a rare glimpse into his private life. During a recent appearance on the "I AM" podcast with Jeff Koinange, Omondi revealed the complexities of growing up in a large polygamous family.

The comedian’s father, the late William Omondi, was a Chief Inspector who lived a full life. He had five wives and 14 children in total. Eric was the second born in his mother’s household. His mother was the fourth of the five wives.

A Stable Household

Despite the large number of siblings and step-siblings, Omondi describes his childhood as remarkably stable. While many might imagine a chaotic environment, he explains that his father maintained a specific structure.

"Our household was very stable because we lived with our dad. The other wives lived elsewhere," Omondi told Koinange. His father lived primarily with Eric’s mother and her children.

This arrangement remained in place until his mother passed away in 2002. Following her death, his father remarried his fifth and final wife.

The Journey to Fame

Omondi’s path to the screen was fueled by a promise from his mother. She told him that if he passed his exams, she would take him to Nairobi to study communication and work on television. Tragically, she died just weeks before his final exams.

Left to find his own way, Omondi eventually raised 127,000 Kenyan shillings for his college fees through a church fundraising event. Though only eight people attended the fundraiser, he managed to gather enough to start his journey.

Loss and Legacy

The comedian has faced significant personal loss, having buried his father, mother, and two siblings. He noted that the death of his brother, Fred Omondi, was the hardest to bear. The two grew up together and moved to Nairobi as a duo to start their comedy careers.

"Of all my family members, I spent most of my time with my brother. He was the head of my creative."

The Move into Politics

Note: According to external news reports from late 2023 and early 2024, Eric Omondi has shifted significantly toward social activism, frequently leading protests regarding the cost of living.

Building on this public profile, Omondi confirmed his intention to run for office in 2027. He believes that while charity work is important, real change in Kenya happens through political decisions.

He currently uses his social media platform of 13 million followers as a personal "media house" to speak on behalf of those who cannot.
