Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei/HANDOUT

Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei briefly shifted the tone in the Senate on Wednesday after celebrating Arsenal FC’s qualification for the UEFA Champions League final, drawing laughter and light moments from the House.

Rising on a point of order, Cherargei expressed excitement over Arsenal’s victory against Atlético Madrid, which secured the London club a place in the final for the first time since 2006.

“Mr Speaker, I am happy today that Arsenal yesterday thrashed Atletico Madrid. We hope PSG will be beaten by Bayern so that Arsenal can win the finals,” he said.

His remarks, though brief, were cut short after the speaker said he was out of order, where he immediately shifted from sporting flavour into the formal proceedings, as senators momentarily shifted attention from legislative matters to football.

Arsenal sealed their place in the final with a 1-0 win at the Emirates Stadium, advancing 2-1 on aggregate.

The decisive goal came in the first half after Leandro Trossard’s effort was parried by goalkeeper Jan Oblak, allowing Bukayo Saka to slot home the rebound.

Under manager Mikel Arteta, Arsenal held firm in the second half, with key performances from Declan Rice and Gabriel Magalhães helping the team withstand pressure from the Spanish side.

The club will now face either Bayern Munich or Paris Saint-Germain in the final, with Bayern holding a slim advantage following the first leg of their semi-final clash.

Cherargei’s comments reflect the widespread enthusiasm among football fans in Kenya, where the UEFA Champions League commands a large following, particularly for English Premier League clubs such as Arsenal.

While parliamentary debates often focus on policy, governance and national issues, moments like these occasionally highlight the shared interests of leaders and citizens beyond politics.

With the final now in sight, anticipation is building among supporters, including those within the country’s political circles, as Arsenal seek to lift the Champions League trophy.
