Kakamega deputy governor Ayub Savula has asked retired president Uhuru Kenyatta to quit his position as Jubilee Party Leader to salvage his retirement package.

Speaking at Kidundu in Vihiga County, Savula said that Kenyatta will lose his retirement package if he fails to step aside as party leader and keep away from active politics.

He said that Uhuru has violated the law by hanging onto the Jubilee party leader beyond the six months required under the Presidential Retirement Benefits Act.

“Parliament is seized of the matter and Uhuru should resign as Jubilee party leader within 24 hours, failing which will see him lose benefits attached to a retired head of state,” he said.

The motion requires lawmakers to pass the motion by a two-thirds majority to withdraw the benefits.

Savula reminded Uhuru that he used the same law to suspend retirement benefits for the late Raila Odinga as former Prime minister, Musalia Mudavadi as deputy prime minister and Kalonzo Musyoka as retired vice president when he was president for holding onto leadership of their parties.

“The law never applies retrogressively and Kenyatta should be prepared to be subjected to the same,” he added.

Nandi senator Samson Cherarhei has filed a motion in the senate seeking to withdraw retirement perks for Kenyatta for engaging in partisan politics aimed at destabilising the government of the day.

A retired president is entitled to Sh 1.1m monthly pension and other hefty allowances, including Sh 200,000 monthly for entertainment and another Sh 300,000 house allowance covering urban and rural homes, Sh 200,000 per month for fuel and another Sh300,000 per month (electricity, water, telephone), under the Presidential Retirement Benefits Act.

He is also entitled to Sh 40m gratuity for the two terms he served as president

The law also grants him two new cars of the retired President's choice and two 4-wheel drive vehicles (replaceable every 3 years).

All cars have specific engine capacity requirements minimum of 3000cc to a maximum of 3400cc among other benedits.

President William Ruto’s allies have been attacking Uhuru accusing him of engaging in partisan politics instead of embracing the unifying role traditionally associated with retired Heads of State.

They have asked Uhuru to emulate his predecessors by stepping back from active politics and promoting national cohesion.

“I respect Uhuru as a former president and a leader I have worked with in government, but he should now serve as a beacon of peace, unity and statesmanlike counsel,” national Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula said in Busia County on Saturday.
