Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers on Tuesday staged a peaceful demonstration outside Parliament Buildings in Nairobi, intensifying their push for absorption into permanent and pensionable terms.

The teachers, drawn from different parts of the city, marched while blowing vuvuzelas and whistles, and waving placards and banners urging the government to address what they described as continued exploitation of qualified educators”

Some of the placards carried statements such as “Hata semester moja si 17k. Confirm 44K now” and “Hatutaki ahadi, tunataka confirmed #confirm us."

Others demanded the implementation of court orders and clear career progression guidelines, with one banner reading: “No free labour for gov’t. Clear JSS teachers now. Clear career guidelines. No confirmation, no school. #Confirm 44k intern teachers.”

The latest protest comes just over a week after a similar demonstration held on April 27, when JSS teachers also took to the streets to demand better terms.

During that earlier protest, teachers carried placards reading “Justice for the degree #17k kwani ni shot?” and “Enough is enough, stop exploiting qualified teachers,” highlighting concerns over remuneration and job security.

In both protests, teachers have consistently called for the confirmation of 44,000 intern teachers currently serving in public schools, saying their qualifications and workload warrant permanent employment.

They have also called on the government and the Teachers Service Commission to respect court rulings related to their employment and to provide structured career progression pathways.
