Despite battling to a barren draw against leaders Migori Youth on Sunday, Okidi insists the battle for the title is still on.
“It is not the result we expected, but we will continue to push. We want to keep the momentum because we want to finish on top of the NSL log,” said Okidi.
He rued missed chances and accused their opponents of time-wasting tactics in the second half.
“We had the upper hand, but we did not convert our chances. We want to win all our remaining games,” noted the former Shabana FC head coach.
Okidi, the national U-17 team Rising Stars assistant coach, hailed the huge number of fans who turned up for the game as the club extended their unbeaten home run to 16 matches.
Migori Youth’s coach Sammy Owano hailed the two teams for exhibiting beautiful football.
“We witnessed good football, and I’m satisfied with the result. Mombasa created chances, we also had our fair share,” said Owano.
He wants his side to be more clinical in front of the goal.
The league’s top scorer, Syphas Otieno, is confident the two teams will qualify for the SportPesa League.
“The two teams will qualify for the top-tier league. However, we must fight for the title. We want the bragging rights,” said Otieno, who leads the charts with 18 goals.
He is excited about the prospect of leading Migori Youth to their maiden SportPesa League appearance.
“My target is to lead the team to the top-tier league. The top scorer’s award will be like a bonus,” noted the youngster.
Migori Youth face the Michael Olunga Foundation Academy (MOFA) at Awendo Stadium on Sunday, while Mombasa United will host stuttering Nairobi City Stars at Mombasa Sports Club.
The two teams are joint top with 65 points with seven games to go. However, Migori rank first due to a healthier goal difference.
Equity Bank cemented the third place after a hard-fought 1-0 win over former Premier League side City Stars.
The bankers have 60 points, one ahead of 4th-placed 3K FC, while MOFA sit fifth with 57 points.
At the bottom, Kabati Youth, Mully Children’s Family (MCF), Mwatate United and Vihiga United are embroiled in a tense survival battle.
Kabati are 17th with 28 points; MCF 18th with 24 points, same as Mwatate at 19th, while former Premier League side Vihiga United are bottom with 20 points.
