Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka meets Pastor George Odhiambo at Nyakongo SDA Church in Rangwe constituency/Robert Omollo

Wiper Patriotic Front party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has arrived in Homa Bay to seek political support from the bedrock of his former ally, Raila Odinga.

Kalonzo began his two-day tour of Homa Bay County by attending a church service and fundraiser for a campsite at Nyakongo SDA Church in Gem West Ward, Rangwe Constituency.

He is expected to undertake a “meet the people” tour after the prayer service in market centres along the Rodi Kopany–Rangwe–Asumbi–Suneka road in the county.

Kalonzo has been a longtime political ally of the late former ODM leader Raila Odinga. He supported Raila in his three attempts to become president of the country.

He is now expected to remind residents and seek their political support after standing with Raila for fifteen years.

According to Rangwe MP aspirant Michael Ogallo, Kalonzo is likely to get a significant number of votes from Luo Nyanza on the grounds that he stood with Raila at his hour of need.

He said some voters may sympathise with Kalonzo and back him in the 2027 elections should he be on the presidential ballot.

“Kalonzo has no bad blood with the Luo community. Let him traverse Luo Nyanza because I believe he has many sympathisers,” Ogallo said.

The Wiper leader was accompanied by Embakasi South MP David Mawathe and some party MCAs.

Kalonzo attended the church service following an invitation by Pastor George Odhiambo of Missioners of Hope in Utawala, Nairobi.

Homa Bay is one of the four counties in Luo Nyanza considered ODM strongholds. All elected leaders, from MP to governor, were elected on an ODM ticket.

However, since Raila’s death, the party appears to be facing internal unity challenges, with elected leaders not speaking with one voice. The party is split between the Linda Ground and Linda Mwananchi factions.

Most residents are reportedly supporting President William Ruto’s second-term bid due to development programmes initiated in the region. Ruto endeared himself to residents after agreeing with Raila to form a broad-based government.

According to Ogallo, Kalonzo is likely to make more inroads in Luo Nyanza due to the disunity within ODM.

No elected leader in Homa Bay turned up to welcome the Wiper leader.

Ogallo described Kalonzo as a humble and non-controversial leader and advised him to consistently engage the region.

“The Wiper leader should not be worried by local leaders not accompanying him. They did that to Ruto the first time but later came back to support him,” Ogallo said.
